Tim Smith

5 Star Winery - Halliday Wine Companion

"With a talent for sourcing exceptional old vine fruit from the Barossa floor,Tim Smith has created a small but credible portfolio of wines, currently including Mataro, Grenache, Shiraz, Viognier, and more recently Eden Valley Riesling and Viognier. Tim left his full-time winemaking role with a large Barossa company in 2011, allowing him to concentrate 100% of his energy on his own brand. In '12 Tim joined forces with the team from First Drop (see separate entry), and has moved winemaking operations to a brand-new winery fondly named 'Home of the Brave', in Nuriootpa" - James Halliday

"Tim Smith started his wine career as a cellar hand at Yalumba in 1987. 15 years later, with considerable support from the Yalumba team, he was Winemaker with a wine science degree under his belt and won the Winemaker Exchange Scholarship as part of the Barossa Valley/Rhone Valley Winemaker Exchange Program.  Since then he has worked as a Winemaker with St Hallett, Tatachilla and Chateau Tanunda. Wines made under the deft hand of Tim Smith have won countless awards domestically and internationally, one of the more notable hauls was a staggering 12 Gold Medals at the Berlin Wine Show in 2010. The 2010 London International Wine Show also highlighted Tim’s winemaking prowess, he was responsible for 3 Gold Medals and 3 Best in Class, one of the latter being for the Tim Smith Wines 2009 MGS (Mataro Grenache Shiraz)." - Tim Smith

‘Ginger, exotic spice, celery, fresh apricot and white cherry. Has a lightly viscous feel, but keeps itself neat and trim through the mouth with clean acidity, a subtle flintiness and spicy dry lemon tinged finish. Cedar oak plays a part in the wine, but...

Wine Front 94 Points! "From a couple of 80 year old vineyards. 2016 seems like a good vintage for Grenache in these parts. Poached strawberries and cherry, plenty of spice, a pleasant minty perfume, and a deeper earthy smell, maybe kind of like wet...

Andrew Graham 92 Points! Tim Smith has a real knack with texture. That may sound notional, but all of his reds – and I’m largely talking reds here – have a generosity that I suspect has broad appeal. I want to call it softness, but it’s not actually...
