Coriole

5 Star Winery Rating - Halliday Wine Companion

"While Coriole was not established until 1967, the cellar door and gardens date back to 1860, when the original farm houses that now constitute the cellar door were built. The oldest shiraz forming part of the estate plantings dates back to 1917, and since '85, Coriole has been an Australian pioneer of sangiovese and the Italian white variety fiano. Shiraz has 65% of the plantings, and it is for this variety that Coriole is best known." - James Halliday

"Coriole was started by my family in the 1960s. It is a beautiful spot looking south towards many McLaren Vale vineyards, the old Willunga Range and the Fleurieu Bight. The estate has a lot of Shiraz vines, the oldest planted in 1919. There is also our first Sangiovese vineyard planted in 1985 as well as the first Fiano vineyard (2001), both the oldest of their kind in Australia.

Winemaking at Coriole is a very traditional process but we also like to experiment and try different techniques to see the influence on wine style. Red wines are mainly open fermented in stainless steel or old wax lined concrete tanks. Ferments are hand plunged. A portion of new oak is used for many of our estate reds but many wines such as Sangiovese and Redstone Shiraz are specifically matured in older oak to gain maturity with minimum contribution of oak flavour and extract in the wine." - Mark Lloyd, Coriole
