"Lethbridge is a star of the Geelong region. Their topmost expression of Chardonnay is their Allegra. It is made in the pursuit of maximum flavour, from grape growing, through winemaking and then in long-term bottle maturation. Here is a chance to try two stellar vintages of this great Australian Chardonnay.
Sourced from the ultra low yielding Rebenburg vineyard at Mount Duneen, the tiny volume of grapes are handpicked, whole bunch pressed to ferment naturally in new oak, with approximately 12 months maturation on gross lees.
The 2014 has an array of ripe and dried stone fruit with oak-derived flavours playing out now as butter-toasted nuts, almond and vanilla brulee. Creamy, slippery and absolutely charming, this Allegra 2014 is beautiful now, but not showing any hints of falling over any time soon.
Equally, you can enjoy and compare it to the 2018, a little more vibrant and upfront with stonefruit and citrussy freshness. Considerably textural, complex and long, this is a powerhouse of a Chardonnay that is kept shapely by expert winemaking and great quality Chardonnay fruit.
Both Maree and Ray Nadeson completed their winemaking degree at Charles Sturt University after which Ray concluded “winemaking is not really that different to science, both are creative and both involve 99% perspiration, 1% inspiration”.
