[SOLD-OUT] Esmonin Cote de Nuits Villages 2013

Variety: 100% Pinot Noir
Sub-Appellation: Cote de Nuits - Villages
Region: Burgundy, France

This smart little Burgundy from Sylvie Esmonin is the product of (virtually) organic vineyards from within the Cote de Nuits. The fruit is partially de-stemmed and then it's cold-macerated to giving the wine it's vibrant ruby appearance. The 2013 presents lifted aromas of exotic spice, herbs and wildflowers following on to flavours of sour cherry, cranberries and currants on the palate. Taut acid and firm, grippy tannins carry this moderately-weighted wine through to a persistent finish - Wine House

Sylvie Esmonin harvested between October 5 and 9, explaining that she wasn't waiting for more sugar but rather wanted the acidity levels in the grapes to go down and was also waiting for the tannins to ripen. Virtually no triage was necessary at harvest-time, she told me. "The wines were very acid before the malolactic fermentations and they're very fresh now--and not at all meager," said Esmonin, adding that they had the thickness and density to support chaptalization of between 0.5% and 0.8%. Esmonin was not shy about vinifying her 2013s with whole clusters, although she cut the percentage somewhat for her Clos Saint-Jacques. - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous Media
