[SOLD-OUT] Dr Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese 2020

94-95 POINTS - JAMES SUCKLING

"Super-juicy, but with all the peachy elegance you expect from the Mosel! Delicate notes of tropical flowers and mangosteen. Beautifully integrated grape sweetness. Long, filigree finish." - James Suckling

"Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese is grown on a precipitously steep, rocky vineyard that consistently yields some of the most elegant and sophisticated white wines in the world. The mineral-rich, blue Devonian slate soil produces quintessential Mosel Riesling: delicate and refined, with racy minerality.
This Riesling comes from ungrafted vines with an average age of 60 years. The vineyard is sustainably farmed, according to strict German environmental regulations. Selectively hand-harvested grapes underwent cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks and traditional Fuder barrels. Half of the juice was fermented with natural yeasts, the other half with cultured yeasts. Fermentation was arrested by chilling. Alcohol 8%; RS 62.7g/L; total acidity 8.5g/L.
The 2020 growing season and harvest both got off to an early start here in the Mosel, but ended up giving us picture-perfect fruit for excellent dry wines, as well as brilliant off-dry and medium-sweet wines at the lower end of the Prädikat spectrum. When describing the 2020 vintage overall, our cellarmaster, Bernhard Schug, summed it up best by simply calling it “a Kabinett/Spätlese year”. The 2020 vintage should be a showcase for the typical mineral structure of Mosel Riesling." – Dr.
