Quealy

"Kathleen Quealy and husband Kevin McCarthy lost no time after their ties with T’Gallant (purchased from them by Foster’s in 2003) were finally severed. As they were fully entitled to do, they already had their ducks set up in a row, and in short order acquired Balnarring Estate winery (being significantly upgraded) and leased Earl’s Ridge Vineyard near Flinders. In a move reminiscent of Janice McDonald at Stella Bella/Suckfizzle in the Margaret River, they launched their business with Pobblebonk (a white blend) and Rageous (a red blend), plus a Pinot Noir and a Pinot Gris with a passing nod to convention. The estate plantings are 2 ha each of pinot noir, tocai friulano and pinot gris, and 1 ha each of chardonnay and muscat giallo. Kathleen (with five children) is a human dynamo; this is a business sure to succeed."James Halliday's Wine Companion

"The 2011 is the second vintage and the wine spent 150 days on its skins in a combination of terracotta amphora and old oak - many reds spent a quarter of that time on skins to extract flavour. This is beguiling and medium-bodied with typical nebbiolo...
