'A stylish, savoury and rather closed pinot of texture, tightness and length. It's quite reductive and needs plenty of aeration for its delicate fragrance of rose petals, red cherries and plums to flower in harmony with earthy, meaty and raspberry scents. Fine and silky, with a delightfully sweet presence of vibrant red fruits above a fine, bony chassis, it's simply crying out for time in the bottle.'

'William Downie has three pinots noirs from 2008 - this Yarra Valley version, one from the Mornington Peninsula and a new Gippsland release from eighteen year old vines. He's also planted his own vineyard (in Gippsland, Victoria) at a density of 11,000 vines per hectare, which he claims to be the highest density planting in Australia (though we might have to see about that). In any case I'm glad he's the one doing the pruning. It has a good tight focus when it's first opened though I found that it loosened in the decanter fairly swiftly. It tastes of plums and sandalwood, mint and cloves, though there's a meaty, bitter, sour cherry character here too that I personally find most appealing. Lovely length and purity. And a good amount of impact, though it sits clearly within varietal boundaries. Very good wine.'
