"Purely in terms of weight, and not flavour, this has a lighter body than the Shiraz or Cabernet Malbec. The youngest vines were 95yo at the time of vintage, and all the vines producing all or any grapes incorporated in Wendouree's wines are in prime condition for such ancient vines. There's a silky patina on entry into the mouth, then there is a relentless build-up of purple and black fruits, and the rippling muscle of tannins. Great wine from a great vintage."

Wine Front 95 Points!

"A 60/40 split on Shiraz and Mataro from 1893, 1919 and 1920 plantings. Clare Valley Mataro is a lovely thing. It’d be fascinating to try a straight Mataro from Wendouree.

Toasted hazelnuts and chocolate, red fruits, mint and cut fennel, floral perfume, and just parking all those descriptors, it’s just a really good wine to get your nose into, and inhale deeply. Not Dennis Hopper style in Blue Velvet — that would be strange — but more a stop-and-smell-the-roses kind of deal. Medium bodied, nutty and perfumed, red fruits and freshness, fine pumice stone tannin, a salt and sage seasoning gives it a bit of extra stuffing, and a clean boysenberry and spice finish of wonderful length finishes it off. So much character. So much goodness."
