Deep garnet colored with a touch of remaining purple at the rim, the 2012 The Laird is one of those wines you could just go on smelling all day. It opens with a complex perfume of kirsch, dried mulberries, blackberry tart and spice cake over cloves, mocha, dusty earth, incense, star anise, yeast extract and aged beef. The full-bodied palate is drop-dead seductive, unfurling in the mouth to reveal exotic spice, meat, earth and berry preserves layers, supported by firm, velvety tannins and seamless acid. The finish seems to go on forever—and this is exactly what you want it to do. Stunning.

The latest release from this Marananga single vineyard is another block buster Shiraz. Rich, opulent and laden with black berry fruits, this wine has a seductive nose of tar, black liquorice, bruleed black fruits, Victoria plum spice, blue berry crumble freshly out the oven and a measured lick of expensive sophisticated oak. The secret of this Vineyard is its ability to produce fruit with great phenolics, excellent pHs and super acid / fruit balance combined with a harmonious structure. Indeed, the concentration of fruit is amazingly intense yet so balanced with complex hints of roasted coffee beans, creme brûlée, espresso, savoury cassis, and blue berry with a most luxuriously opulent, ageless finish. This certainly is a super luxury wine worthy of its premium price. Drink from 2020 to 2045+

(100 percent new French oak) Inky ruby. Powerful, deep-pitched aromas of ripe black and blue fruits, violet, incense, mocha and Indian spices are lifted by a strong suggestion of smoky minerals. Utterly stains the palate with densely packed blackberry, blueberry, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors that slowly stretch out and become sweeter with aeration. Conveys a distinctly powerful character but comes off elegant, showing no rough edges. The strikingly long, gently tannic finish eventually leaves behind sappy blue fruit liqueur, vanilla and spicecake qualities.

The Gnadenfrei vineyard is handpicked in two separate parcels a few days apart depending on vintage conditions. It is immediately taken to the winery where the fruit is gently de-stemmed into wooden & concrete open top fermenters. It is then carefully nurtured for 6-7 days on skins with pump overs occurring twice daily, varying in duration and intensity. When primary fermentation is almost complete, the wine is drained from the skins and the must is gently basket pressed for 8 hours. The wine remains in a stainless steel tank until primary fermentation is completed. It is then run directly into new French barriques coopered by Dominique Laurent where they spend 36 months under temperature controlled conditions. Once the oak and the wine have melded perfectly the wine is blended and bottled without the use of filtration or fining. Finally it is matured in the bottle for a further 24 months before release. The Laird is a wine born from perfectionists following the highest possible standards.

The 2012 Vintage will undoubtedly go down as one of the great vintages that the Barossa Valley has experienced. The Vintage is completely ‘dirt driven’ in that there was no serious weather event that pulled the flavour profiles of the wines either way. The cool weather conditions and resulting slow ripening period allowed us to pick The Laird with perfect aromatic ripeness and purity of fruit and the sublime quality is second to none. The Western block was harvested in perfect condition on the 19th of March and the Eastern side a day later on the 20th. Both blocks remained on skins for just one week. The resulting wine shows all the opulence and elegance of previous Laird’s, but with a complexity, precision and prominence that will make sure it ages gracefully for the next 20 years plus. One of the greatest examples of Barossa Valley Shiraz.
