“A long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I was privy to a small scale, trade only dissection of the Barossa Valley run by a few Barossa local wine folks. It focussed on single vineyards and clones and small bottlings and the like. Amongst it was a selection of stuff from Torbreck that was sort of ‘off the record’ gear, like a grenache from Philippou vineyard. It was a bit of a star on the day. Long story short, here’s the the wine as a 2014 bottling. It’s heady with clove and sandalwood oak, shows some mocha, rolls into dark plum, fig and date character, yet still has a prettiness and sweet-decay floral character too. In the palate, tacky-paint-drying texture, but sweet fruited, with its heels licked by more mocha, this time powdery, and fine ribs of dusty tannin lending structure. There’s a raw meatiness to the wine, and oak suggests itself in spice and drying texture. It’s a medium weight, perfumed, generous yet firm wine of good welterweight punchiness.”

This single vineyard Grenache comes from the highly prized Philippou vineyard located on the western edge of Rowland Flat, originally planted in 1893. The vineyard is situated on top of a ridge with a sandy top soil and deep clay base which traps and harnesses the rainfall during the winter months and allows this dry grown vineyard to sustain itself throughout vintage. 2014 was another low yielding, high quality vintage with some early rain extending the ripening period and allowing perfect flavour build up during this extensive cool stretch at the end of vintage.
This unique parcel has all the bright, opulent fruit characteristics that we look for in old, dry grown Grenache combined with luscious exotic spice, deep dark berry fruit intensity and depth of flavour. The rich, luxuriant fruit was further enhanced by barrel maturation in a brand new 2400 litre ‘Boutes’ Foudre which perfectly balances the wine style we were looking to achieve.
