In the early 1960s, ex-schoolteacher turned earth moving contractor, Walter Henning combined forces with some Ballarat businessmen and began the search for land to plant a vineyard. Walter with Geoff and Max Oliver flew their aircraft all around Victoria's Pyrenees for over 200hrs searching for a suitable site. Finally they settled on the Moonambel area. Whilst initially considered a wildcat scheme, the 1700 acre (688 hectares) site at Taltarni (named by Walter Henning), became one of the founding wineries of the Pyrenees. It was first planted in 1969. The name 'Taltarni' in aboriginal dialect means Red Earth relating to the unique iron rich Ordovician red soil of the Pyrenees Wine Region.
