[SOLD-OUT] Syrahmi Demi Shiraz 2012

This is a brilliant follow-on from the inaugural vintage in 2011. A substantially better vintage could only mean that a brilliantly affordable Heathcote shiraz could only be better than its successful predecessor... and boy is it! It reeks of class and character, showing classic Heathcote identity & sophistication beyond its meagre price point. Lashings of blackberry/raspberry/plum fruits, earth, dried herbs and spice. The palate shows silky tannins and generosity but doesn't lack power nor concentration with raspberry, brambly fruit, earthly mineral notes, spice and dark cherry leading the charge.

"Half the amount of new oak (15%), half the amount of whole bunch (40%) and roughly half the price " demi. Oh, and single clone of shiraz. This is the idea of Adam Foster, chef-turned-sommelier-turned-winemaker and good guy. Effusive as Foster is about what he does now, he has some great pedigree working in France, particularly with Ogier and the high end wines of Chapoutier under his belt, before starting his full time-full time career as winemaker. The fruit is from the lauded Greenstone Vineyard.

Rich, ripe aromas of cherry elixir and medicinal herbs. Attractive though, and a touch savoury too. A wild feel to the wine; pepper over crisp red briary fruit and a frame from brick dust, savoury tannins. Juicy and wicked to drink, the wine has enough purity of fruit coupled to gentle oakiness that you feel you're drinking something fancy while drinking something rapidly " a neat balance. A super bistro wine. Seek it out."
