[SOLD-OUT] Standish The Relic Shiraz Viognier 2019

WINE FRONT 95 POINTS!

"From the Hongell Vineyard, sees 1% viognier used. A very gentle seasoning. Pumping out perfume, white flowers, blackcurrant jubes, spice, chocolate orange. Slick, supple silky tannin, rich dark juice-laden flavour, clean acidity, big aromatics and a mudslide of fine silty tannin on a long finish. Not my preferred style, but of undeniably high quality." - Gary Walsh

"Big perfume, ripe berries, floral whiffs, sweet, turned earth character, jellied plum, blackcurrant pastilles. So much to sniff on. Supple, soft and juicy in the palate, though there’s some tension in the texture and it finishes long, fanning out magnificently. A sense of poise and lift too. Wonderful, elegant, big-lush expression." - Mike Bennie

"One of the Barossa Valley's finest expressions of Shiraz Viogner, from a cult winemaker. Compelling. The Standish wines are capable of going toe-to-toe with Australia's most iconic Shiraz. This coferment of Shiraz with Viognier brings a wine of seductive perfume and texture. The palate is deeply flavoured, tending towards the savoury with earth, licorice spice and a saline minerality. Absolutely gorgeous now, but will age beautifully. Australia's answer to the Northern Rhone." - Wine House

"Hongell Family Vineyard, Krondorf. Planted on own roots in 1991. Clay Loam over weathered bedrock with intermittent bands of quartz. Shiraz grown in this part of the Barossa tends to be very aggressively tannic. We planted a single row of Viognier alongside the Shiraz which is picked altogether on the same morning. The co-fermentation of even a tiny amount of Viognier not only adds heady aromatics to the mix but also softens the otherwise firm tannins." - Dan Standish

"Dan Standish is an extremely experienced winemaker, adding work in the Napa and Sonoma valleys in California, La Rioja in Spain and the Rhone Valley in France to his domestic winemaking. In 1999 he was able to negotiate a small parcel of 96-year-old shiraz from his parents' vineyard in the Vine Vale subregion of the Barossa Valley. This produces 300 dozen of The Standish, a wild yeast, open-fermented and basket-pressed shiraz matured in French oak for 30 months. The Standish, which uses his Rhone Valley experience led to the creation of The Relic, Shiraz (93%)/Viognier (7%) co-fermented, otherwise made with similar techniques." - Wine Companion
