[SOLD-OUT] Sorrenberg Chardonnay 2016

'So satisfying, complex and just darn wonderful to drink.' - Wine Front 96 Points!

Wine Front 96 Points!

I have been very lucky to see a variety of vintages of Sorrenberg chardonnay over past months, only confirming I think it is at the top of the pile for consistently excellent, personality-laden chardonnay. It’s a more powerful release, fuller in depth of oak, lees-derived complexity and mineral-esque impact. I loved it. Certified biodynamic farming of course is Sorrenberg’s baseline.

Ample in perfume and flavour, yet shows control and authority – a striking chardonnay of weight and presence. There’s sumptuous aromas of stone fruit, flint, nougat-and-spice oak, ripe citrus. The palate is almost firm with layered fruit, acid and well-meshed oak – a push of concentrated gently sweet fruit flavour, spice, slate-like mineral character and chewy-cedary-spice stains the palate gently. While there’s impact here, there’s also smoothness, evolution in the glass as the wine opens. So satisfying, complex and just darn wonderful to drink.

"Cool site, elegant, and pure - crafted by husband and wife team, farmers Barry and Jan Morey. The style of Chardonnay Sorrenberg produce is recognised as some of the very best in the country. Previously described by Jancis Robinson MW as 'one of the best wines of my Australian travels' and as having 'lots of soul', this wine is so respected that each year it quickly sells out.

The 2016 Sorrenberg Chardonnay is 100% barrel fermented in French oak of which 25-30% is new oak. To add complexity all of the wine goes through natural yeast fermentation as well as full malolactic fermentation. Further complexity is achieved through extended lees contact for ten months, with weekly stirring, then a further eight months barrel maturation. Minimal handling & filtration ensures maximum flavour is retained.

"The bouquet of the 2016 Chardonnay is presenting with delicate aromas of lemon zest combined with unobtrusive peach and pineapple aromas. These enticing aromas leads you on to a palate that is complex showing grapefruit and lemon, mineral stone, balanced with the appealing oak and pleasant acidity creating a long lingering palate with a touch of mealyness on the finish. This wine will cellar for 10 years plus."
