"Located in the cool Lenswood sub-region, this vineyard, originally planted for fizz, produces a pale, precise Chardonnay. Gentle lees-stirring sheathes the rapier- like palate of Golden Delicious, grapefruit sorbet and lime zest, with a hint of struck match. Ageing for 10 months in 500-litre French oak puncheons adds delicate vanilla nuances, allowing the crystalline fruit to shine. Drinking Window 2019 - 2026" - Decanter Magazine
"A compelling wine; exudes power with lots of flavour but doesn't appear overworked or too big. Kicks off with ginger flower, more stone fruit this vintage, some citrus (especially mandarin), and complex leesy notes with creamed honey. Deep, with a luscious palate of woodsy spices and balanced oak. Complex, yet keeps a lightness of touch." - James Halliday Wine Companion 2019
"The high-altitude Lenswood Vineyard has enabled Shaw + Smith to up the ante for Chardonnay. The complex bouquet holds lemon/citrus and mineral nuances, while the palate is tremendously intense, delicate and precise." - Gourmet Traveller Magazine, September 2019
"I took this out to dinner on Saturday and drank most of the bottle myself. Sourced from Shaw + Smith’s Lenswood Vineyard, planted in 1999, it spends 10 months in new and used French oak. Immediately, this is such a precise wine. Finely toned, classy modern Chardonnay with delicate whisps of creamed apple juice that is just perfectly pitched, the palate has spice from the oak then gentle apple and grapefruit, the fine embrace of oak in the background and then poised, fresh but (not too fresh) acidity. It’s just a little shy, but this is the very model of a modern Aussie Chardonnay. Best drinking: Now, but probably even better in 12 months, and drink for at least 8 years." - Andrew Graham, OzWineReviews.com 18.7/20, 95/100
"Sourced exclusively from Shaw + Smith's Lenswood property. Planted in 1999, the vineyard has east and west facing aspects and reaches 500 meters above sea level. The soil is brown loam over clay with some broken shale and stone ridges.Whole bunches were chilled overnight, then pressed, before fermentation in new and used 500L French oak puncheons. The wine spent a further 10 months in barrel with gentle stirring.
Since purchasing the vineyard in 2012, significant investments have been made to further enhance the site. It had always shown potential for a single site wine and in 2014 a small amount was selected for our first 'Lenswood Vineyard' Chardonnay. A fine boned Chardonnay that reflects the conditions of the vintage and the character of this unique vineyard site." - Shaw + Smith
