Gourmet Traveller Wine 5 Stars!
This Cabernet-dominant wine hails from St Julien, the "second" wine to Chateau Gruaud-Larose's feted Grand Vin. It comes from the younger vines but offers superb value and fascinating drinking to the Bordeaux lover. Lavishly written up in a recent edition of Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine, here are the writers' comments:

"Delicious red fruits like boysenberrry, with sandalwood and roasted meats. Substance and style." - Peter Bourne

"Complex, mellow and drinking at its best. Hints of tobacco and herbal character." - Peter Forrestal

"The colour may have mature, rusty tinges, but there's still sweet, berry fruit... I enjoyed the rich flavours and the interplay between berry and tobacco leaf and thought the tannins were well balanced. It's ready now and will hold for a few years." Nick Bulleid

"This was so good that when one of the team first tasted it, he thought it was the Grand Vin. This is exotic, floral and aromatic, with cassis and hints of ginger. The high Merlot proportion (33%), which was so rich this year, gives the wine an extra roundness in 2005, while the finish is very pure and long. Remaining true to its St Julien terroir this is very good indeed."
