[SOLD-OUT] Samuels Gorge Tempranillo 2012

A Tempranillo is a wily fiend in the vineyard and at times works its magic to get the better of us. Yet on the right plot with ample thought, this infinitely low yielding, temperamental Iberian icon is an interpretation of a rustic landscape more than most. I love that: witnessing the rugged and graceful Vale landscape in our wines.

In part 2012 was the perfect vintage, one of the best of the last 20 years with bright blue, open skies and moderate temperatures " but for the winds of change. A combined throw back to the previous shady, low yielding vintage and a constant hammering by some unruly south easterlies parched the leaves and earth. Wind weary vines yielded tight bunches and small berries resulting wines with restrained power, concentration and ample tannins that need a little extra time in the tomb.

This nearly unviable 2012 yield gave a crazy depth within Tempranillo's heady dark aromatics. The broody, tart side of the sweet black cherry, red currant, cassia bark, sarsaparilla and earth. The savoury animal of Tempranillo has been in great balance over the last few years but this one is picture perfect. We've bridled the feral barnyard: think of bareback, gallop down Sellicks salt spray, ribbons of seaweed in the wind. Hunting wild mushrooms after the first rain in autumn: the palpable steaminess of the vegetation. Twilight of dusk, darkening.

Warm flavours of distilled Morello cherries, tart kumquat, dried spices and fresh to-bacco leaf, with a sexy clip of cedary oak gather. Vibrant pomegranate toned acidity gives the wine a racing pulse " it feels deliciously fresh " though at the same time, the complex blend of components feel well integrated along Tempranillo's signature gravelly tannin.

Think the everlasting, rustic Spanish landscape of vineyards and terracotta rooftops or the stretch of white washed rusticity of the terrace restaurants in Madrid abuzz with conversation and plentiful tapas " aged Jamon hanging from the ceiling, salty olives, white anchovies dripping with succulent green olive oil and yeasty aromas of warm bread. Painted wall tiles depict bullfighting and flamenco dancing. Bewitching menus of Galicianoctopus, oxtail stew and blood pudding sandwiches. Tempranillo the ultimate companion: a key ingredient of the surroundings.

We mature the Tempranillo in barrel for only twelve months, one year less than our core range varietals, to preserve the balance and complex, savoury varietal flavours. We appreciate your patience in cellaring the 12 Tempranillo to allow the edges to temper " the upside: this wine will go the distance and reward your patience over time.
