Australian Financial Review: Top 20 Wines of 2009!
To celebrate its 150th birthday, Saltram has released 1,859 bottles of this simply magnificent aged Australian fortified. From a single vintage that has, unusually, been aged in cask rather than bode, and made from what the current Saltram winemakers believe may be grenache, shiraz and possibly some muscadelle, a little of this goes a long way. Light tawny with a bright olive rim, there are aromas of rich mahogany and walnut, toffee and rancio that lead onto an incredibly intense palate that is sweet (at about 180 g/l) and textured; the whole counterbalanced by a staggeringly high 10.69 gll of acidii that is reminiscent of great Madeira.
Australian Financial Review, 2009
For its 150th anniversary in 2009, Saltram is proud to announce the release of a limited amount of the 1959 Vintage Rare Tawny. Only 1,859 bottles have been made to reflect Saltram's founding year. The name Vintage Rare Tawny refers to important definitions which characterise the wine's style. To obtain the 'Rare' moniker, fortified wine has to be more than 15 years of age. 'Vintage' refers to the fact that the wine is sourced from a single vintage, but unlike most vintage fortified wines which have been aged in bottle, the Vintage Rare Tawny was barrel aged to make a Tawny style. Savour this wine's depth of flavour, complexity, seamless palate and extraordinary length by itself, but never on your own.
