Great Western

Great Western

"Visit world-renowned wineries featuring age-old vines and award-winning wine. Sample exceptional shiraz of the sparkling and still kind, and regional fare to complement both, at cellar doors and cosy cafes...

Located in the middle of the Western Highway between Melbourne and Adelaide, Great Western was settled by sheep graziers in the 1840s, then grew following the discovery of gold and later the planting of its now famous grape vines. The area boasts a crop of pioneering wineries, earning it a reputation for producing some of Australia's finest wine.

Sample varietals in Best's red gum tasting room and take a tour of the incredible hand-dug cellar, built back in the 1860s. Next stop is Seppelt's, where you can head underground and explore the three kilometres of labyrinthine tunnels or 'drives', which house the maturing sparkling wine. Share a bottle of Grampians Estate's famous sparkling shiraz and a cheese platter at the cellar door." - Visit Melbourne
