Excellent medium ruby. High-pitched, still-youthful aromas and flavors of black cherry, minerals, graphite, licorice, espresso and menthol. Primary, intense and impeccably balanced, with strong but harmonious acidity giving grip to the sappy dark fruit flavors and extending the extremely long finish. Wonderfully dense and silky wine--more elegantly styled than the 1996, thanks in part to the relatively cool summer. This should almost certainly merit an even higher score in a decade or so. Amazing wine in the making, and likely to merit an even higher score 10 or 20 years from now.

"The 1994 Vintage Port may be the finest regular vintage port I have tasted from this house in decades. Sadly, the production was absurdly small (approximately 800 cases) as the new owners, France's AXA, want to make a qualitative statement - immediately. Opaque ruby/purple-colored, with fabulous purity and richness, full body, moderate sweetness, layers of jammy fruit, and well-integrated alcohol. There is some tannin in the finish, but this is a large-scaled, authoritatively flavored as well as elegant example of port that needs cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2035"

"Very dark crimson. Meaty, leathery, this is port out of Côte Rôtie! Very rich start, very sumptuous and seductive glossy start with the massively ripe and interesting fruit almost masking the fine-grained tannins underneath. This is lovely wine with, surely, an exceptionally long window of drinkability. Real excitement in there."
