"This wine has appealing purity with lovely violet aromas and hints of dark berry. Subtle sweetness is matched by gentle tannins. Elegant and poised cabernet franc."
GOURMET TRAVELLER WINE - TOP 100 RELEASES - December 2013
"From the Howell vineyard in Hawkes Bay, the Growers Collection sources parcels of fruit from vineyards that work to the ideology of Pyramid Valley winemakers Mike and Claudia Weersing. 'Chinon like soils', they say, and some whole bunch in the mix too. This is where their mother yeast program comes to the fore " each ferment is 'innoculated' with a yeast culture created physically in each vineyard from the native yeasts found on the grapes. Tough traipsing around the NZ countryside for this, but Mike Weersing is adamant this is how his wines should begin ferment. This wine sees no additions, not even sulphur, and is made in older oak.
Bang! There it is. The tell tale of cab franc in garrigue like herbs, touch of mint and the sauciness of ripe tomatoes. So varietal, in that way, but there's floral notes and cassis dancing around too. Impressively wrought in texture with really vibrant fruit curtailed by slashes of cool acidity. Flavours tend to blueberry sweetness, a touch of cedar and a sprinkling of dried herbs. It's such a joyous feel here, but fruit and finesse comes hand-in-hand. So alive and perky, so fresh, so fruity, great shape and suede texture. I want to drink a lot of this."
