“It’s such an impressive vineyard, hand-tended by such impressive people. The attention to detail is phenomenal, the farming meticulous, from the get-go a decided intent to manage the site using biodynamic preparations and principles, while maintaining best, low-to-ground, close-planted vines. The winemaking has been as close to possible transparent, a light use of water colour in a brilliant landscape. The 2013 harvest has been described as epic by most winemakers across New Zealand. The planets aligned. You don’t always know when you open a wine, but you should know by the end of a bottle. This is the kind of wine that would make you drop your hoe in a grand cru vineyard and wonder why you’re fighting the system. It’s haunting, evocative, everything about texture and beauty in wine that absolutely can move a human. A stray glass to a stranger and they’ve joined your table. A sip to a novice and the lights flash behind their eyes. It’s an autumn breeze with sweet and savoury perfume. A gossamer sheet with meat, and bones, and flowers and freshness. You could say game meats, cherry, dried leaves, spice, but you’re not going to cover it. It’s so good, so everything that brings you into a thrall of pinot noir. So good to drink.”
