"Subtly peppery, fresh and bright with lovely raspberry and cherry fruit. Finely spicy, even with a hint of ginger as well as white pepper. Elegant, supple and midweight, this is a lovely fresh example of Syrah showing enough complexity to keep it interesting and great balance"
Jamie Goode, Wine Anorak
"Gaillard's St Joseph wines, the heart and soul of the Estate, are pure and stylish examples of this perhaps underappreciated AOC. Gaillard's St Joseph blend comes from vineyards located in the communes of Chavanay, Malleval and Limony. The soils here are lighter with plenty of granite, producing well-structured, vibrant wines. The individual vineyard parcels are kept separate and are mostly destemmed before being crushed. Each parcel is then vinified separately "to bring out its own individuality" to quote Gaillard, and allowing more options when the time comes to assemble the wine.
The final wine is then aged in Allier and Nevers barrels, 20% new, for 18 to 20 months. Bottled unfiltered, this is a beautifully pure and fragrant 100% Syrah that offers a more lithe mouthfeel and immediate balance than the muscular 2009."
