Distinctive, traditional winemaking style that hasn't changed in half a century. 'People have come back to this style,' according to Gago. Shiraz aged very traditionally in vast (1,460 litre) old oak puncheons at least 50 years old, sometimes with some Cabernet, 10% in this instance. He strongly recommends halves of St Henri 1962 for current drinking! I much enjoyed the 2005. Warm, super-fruity mulberry fruit. Very round and polished and gorgeous. Wonderfully fresh, yet super-welcoming. Very lush and approachable with a merest hint of brine. Big and plummy, with, at the moment, more obvious tannins than Grange actually! 18.0 Jancis Robinson MW ' jancis.robinson.com ' May 09
Aromatic, complex and silky, slipping in its gorgeous blackberry, currant and plum fruit against a seething background of toast, spice, mineral and loamy earth. The texture is seamless, and the flavors just take off, sailing through the long, expressive finish. Best from 2011 through 2020. 95 Points Wine Spectator

There's a lot of box ticking to be done with some of these Penfolds wines, and this vintage puts the multi back into multi-regional blend. There's also 10% Cabernet this year too, which is nice to see. Dark berry, pepper, old wood and leather, spice, menthol, licorice - even mixed peel. Lots going on - the sum of many parts creating a complex whole. It's medium to full bodied yet dense with some grippy tannin traction action and an almost tangy herbal freshness mixing with rich fruit flavour and a long malty finish. It's more your dark and savoury style of St Henri (most recently 99, 03) rather than a sweeter fruited one (98, 04), although not quite as convincing as either the 1999 or 2004. Needs a fair bit of time but certain to reward the patient. Rated : 93+ Points Tasted : Apr09 Alcohol : 14% Closure : Screwcap Drink : 2015 - 2030 The Wine Front
A full deep red, this firm and drying shiraz has a sweet, chocolatey and leathery bouquet of red berry and dark plum confiture, with hint of raisin. It's sumptuous and sweet-fruited, dark and brambly, finishing with excellent length and a lingering firm, but tightly integrated undercarriage.
