"Deeply fragrant with an alluring, floral and ethereal scent of blackberry liqueur, plums, dark cherries and musky spices with minty undertones of restrained oak and sweet leather, this is an elegant, fine-grained and richly flavoured example of the Australian 'burgundy' style, even though its label once contained the word 'claret'. It's long and brooding, with its restrained expression of pure, pristine fruit overlying a chalky backbone of kernelly tannin. Certain to flesh out magnificently. (Barossa, Langhorne Creek, Upper Adelaide, McLaren Vale, Padthaway, 18.9/96, drink 2024-2034)"

Once again, St. Henri more than holds its own in this year's release package .... New oak? No thanks! The 2004 PENFOLDS St. Henri Shiraz offers another alternative (traditional) expression of Shiraz. "A dense dark red wine with a very dark core in the glass, this wine displays intense, dense spicy nutmeg in the glass, with lavender, rosemary, musk and evocative wafts of black & red liquorice rising. Some florals are displayed, although assorted fruits dominate " glaceed cherries, prune (fruitcake mixture) to the fore. Closer inspection reveals aged pipe tobacco and roasted lamb juice/quince complexities. Everything demanded of a 'top-notch' St. Henri palate is delivered with this year's release," Peter said. The second-last PENFOLDS red to be released from this 2004 vintage, this wine adequately partners the 2002, and certainly is in the stellar class of 90/96/98!
