The wine derives its name from the historic Magill Vineyard located in the Adelaide foothills, South Australia. It is the birthplace of Penfolds and the first vineyard established by Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold in 1844. The vineyard is now 6 hectares in size and consists entirely of Shiraz vines, aged between 25 and 45 years.
This wine shows the elegant structure that results from the use of Shiraz grapes picked a little early and is a more contemporary and refined style compared to Penfolds' traditional red wines.
Matured in new American and French oak hogsheads for 18 months.
Deep plum red in colour. This wine has a complex bouquet featuring spicy Shiraz fruit characters, with oak overtones. This wine is full flavoured and complex, yet classically elegant in style. It displays rich, spicy Shiraz fruit flavours complexed by oak maturation with a soft tannin finish. The hallmark of this wine is its superb length and complexity, showing integrated fruit and oak flavours which are very persistent, reflecting the exceptional quality of the 1988 vintage.
Peak drinking period now until 2005. Alc/Vol: 12.0%. Notes sourced from Penfolds.
