Details

"The 1999 vintage in South Australia was defined by generally dry and cool weather conditions during early summer, temporarily disrupted by a hot spell in late January before moderate conditions during vintage. Multi-regional sourcing and strong vineyard management resulted in parcels of fruit being harvested with hallmark fruit richness and ripe tannins. Maturation period of 17 months in new American oak. Impenetrable deep red/purple. Blackberry and blueberry fruit interwoven with perfectly tuned, malty, savoury oak, with liquorice and anise notes hovering above. Upon sitting there is a whirling aromatic shift, the wine becoming more complex, deeper, richer and darker. Layers of fruit, with blackberry and blueberry to the fore, as suggested by the nose. An underlying tarriness and new oak are seamlessly absorbed. A mass of fine grained tannins court a firm tight finish of great length. The wine possesses the essential ingredients of the marque, richness, harmony, and balance. A fitting Grange release to end the 1900's, with decades of life ahead. Alc/Vol: 14.0%."

"Penfolds Shiraz South Australia Grange 1999. Australia's most collectible red. Tremendously classy, offering smoky, earthy blackberry, plum and currant flavors." Wine Spectator, New York, NY - U.S., 30 September 2004

"Penfolds Shiraz South Australia Grange 1999. Not quite as broad and generous as riper vintages, but tremendously classy, offering smoky, earthy blackberry, plum, and currant flavors that compete effectively against cedary oak on the long finish. The flavors gain with each sip, fanning out impressively. It's tight now, but it could age beautifully. Best after 2009." Annual Top Picks, Wine Spectator, New York, NY - U.S., 31 December 2004

"Milky, sweet, coffeed, really notice the oak coming through on these younger vintages. Acids and tannins not yet integrated " but there is a hell of a lot to be impressed by here. Lovely power, lovely softness, lovely hit of savouriness, and then significant length. Similar to the 1994, but better."
