“Fruit from Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Magill, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra. Generally good growing season with fine warm conditions followed by a cool vintage. Another unusual vintage in that the grapes ripened late, but evenly. 96% Shiraz, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. 14 months in new American oak hogsheads. pH 3.60, TA 6.0 g/l. Dark ruby with a black core. Rich and warm and attractively medicinal. Sweet and rich. Fresh finish. Very well balanced. Thicker in the middle than claret but not on the end. Black pepper.”
Jancis Robinson, June 2011

“Still a young wine at age 29, it exhibits massive earthy, meaty, bacon fat notes intermixed with notions of scorched earth, blackberries, currants, pepper, and spice. Full and rich with slightly rustic tannins, it has a good 20 years of life ahead of it. ”
Robert Parker, 2009

Considered an outstanding vintage in Penfolds Rewards of Patience (4th edition, 2000).'Very good. I like this, it's just about perfect!', said Tim White, at the Rewards of Patience tastings in September 1999. 'Very big-boned and just starting to ease into a long final straight. I suspect this is - will be - a classic,' said Anthony Rose at the same tasting. The 1980 Penfolds Grange is predominantly Shiraz with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon (4%). Penfolds
