[SOLD-OUT] Penfolds Bin 9 Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Tyson Stelzer 92 Points!

New red wine to the Penfolds range. Largely McLaren Vale grapes but with input from various South Australian regions. Matured in both French and American oak, only a smallish portion of it new.

It's a wine of clear varietal character and immediate accessibility. It will age but for the most part it's a case of: why wait? Dust, blackcurrant/redcurrant, mid weight, some bay leaf. Dry tannin. Some mulberry. Some chalky tannin. Pretty decent. Could be tempted into rating it a point higher.
Campbell Mattinson, Wine Front, 21st March 2014.

"A brand new Bin, intended to fill the gap as 407 and 707 ascend into the price stratosphere. It's an elegant, bright and lively style of pretty rose bud aromas and morello cherry tang. Crunchy redcurrants and leaf define a tightly coiled palate, a little shy on length and depth for the price. A blend of McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek, Wrattonbully, Barossa, Padthaway, Barossa Valley and Coonawarra, matured for 12 months in French (12% new) and American oak (14% new) hogsheads. Available 6 March 2014."
Tyson Stelzer, Wine Taste Weekly Special Edition 141 - Penfolds Icon and Bin Release
"A new cabernet that slots into the hierachy below Bin 407, much as 407 moved in under 707 years ago as a result of prices rising. A good cabernet in a simpler, more fruit-driven style with dark red fruit and violet aromas. A mercifully light hand on the oak. Medium to full-body, gentle tannins, good varietal character."
Huon Hooke, The Gourmet Traveller Wine Guide 2015.
