Jeremy Oliver Rating 95!
Launched with the 1990 vintage the Bin 407 reflects Penfolds' aim to produce a premium Cabernet that is at once more affordable and more widely available than the Bin 707. This has been made possible as more premium Cabernet vineyards have come into bearing.
The resulting style of wine has proven to be quite different from Bin 707. Bin 407 shows more varietal characters of blackcurrant, mint, leafy overtones and subtle oak.
Vintage Conditions: 1996 was an outstanding year in Coonawarra, yielding some of the most exciting parcels of fruit for several years. Much needed rains replenished the soils during the winter across most of South Australia. The first half of the growing season was dry and cool allowing the fruit to set and mature slowly. The last two months of the season warmed to bring in physically mature, ripe complex fruit.
Deep brick red, archetypal Cabernet Sauvignon aromas of ripe blackcurrant jam with hints of cranberry. Subtle underlying oak, supported by French and American oak, combined with lifted, opulent fruit aromas. Full-bodied, balanced berried fruit combines with anise, eucalyptus and a hint of tar. Chewy tannins complement the muscular fruit yielding an unctuous texture and mouth feel with a silky finish. Peak Drinking: 2002 - 2015 Alc/Vol: 14.0%. Notes sourced from Penfolds.
