Campbell Mattinson 92 points!"Eight months in French oak, 52% new. Penfolds Bin 23 Pinot Noir this year is a wine of both gloss and sinew.
It's quite powerful. Has some reductive input. Dark cherry, olive, plum. Oak shows but as a creamy veneer only. Tannin is the key here. It comes as a firm sheet of dry mineral and spice. Needs a decent stint in a cool dark place"
The Wine Front, 28 Feb 2014
"A savoury and structured style, edgy and firm, with tangy acidity thrust against a wall of firm, fine oak tannins. Beetroot and sour morello cherry fruit has integrity, yet lacks the strength to withstand 8 months in 52% new French oak. Wild fermented with 10% whole bunches."
Tyson Stelzer, Wine Taste Weekly Special Edition 141 - Penfolds Icon and Bin Release
"This wine shows a bright, medium to full red/purple colour. Fresh and spicy to sniff. Tight, dry and savoury, a taut, lean-ish style, a touch of bitterness from the tannins, which are substantial. There's a bit of grip on the aftertaste."
