"New to the Penfolds 'Bin' range - a pinot noir from the Adelaide Hills. Makes perfect sense, given that the Magill winery is almost in the Adelaide Hills. Bin 23 - welcome to the wine world. Some 20 different vineyards contributed to the making of this. Winemaker Peter Gago is aware of suggestions that Penfolds pinot can tend towards 'dry red' territory. He's completely comfortable about this - it's the way it should be, he reckons, if you're trying for a cellarworthy style. Of course, the key word above is 'tends' - clearly you don't want to take this thinking too far. But it's an interesting point he makes. This first Bin 23 tastes of rhubarb, dark and sour cherries, and lots of sappy spice (perhaps a fraction too much; though these character tend to age well). It has excellent tannin structure and pretty good length. Watching it develop should prove interesting. I wouldn't pay full tote, but the quality is decent."
