The hamlet of Marananga lies very close to the centre of the Barossa Valley floor " slightly to the north and west, where warm dry conditions and rich red soils provide the backbone to some of the region's best known wines. 12 months in 20% new French oak, 30% 1-year-old French oak, 20% new American oak, 30% 1-year-old American oak (all hogsheads).

More meaty than the Coonawarra and Kalimna Shirazes. Lovely complex aroma, dark fruit, orange, graphite, spice. Then there's that same meatiness on the palate. Complex. Dry fine tannins, less plush and more structured than than Bins 28 and 128. I might even have thought it had some Cabernet in it. Blackcurrant fruit, cedar, upright. More elegant(JH)

"A wine of persistence and integrity, a good result for the vintage, though a lesser Bin 150. It's a complex, spicy and savoury style of finely textured structure, notes of pepper, layers of savoury, charcuterie, gamey complexity and milk chocolate, opening out into black plum and blackberry fruit. Impressive line and length for the season, underlined by a finely structured, silky tannin profile. Matured for 12 months in 20% new and 30% one-year-old French oak and 20% new and 30% one-year-old American oak."
Tyson Stelzer, Wine Taste Weekly Special Edition 141 - Penfolds Icon and Bin Release
"Deep red/purple colour. Smoky aroma, some charcuterie notes; rich and dense, with loads of tannin and chew. Quite a lot of oak, but not overtly oaky as some of the earlier vintages of this wine. Big, full-bodied, firmly structured shiraz. This needs time."
