[SOLD-OUT] Penfolds Bin 138 2011

Campbell Mattinson 91+ points!

"The cool and wet 2011 season was tougher for grenache in the Barossa than it was, for instance, in McLaren Vale, so the focus of this blend has moved decidedly to shiraz (65%), supported by just 20% grenache and 15% mataro, all from vines older than forty years, and some older than a century. Its deep hue reflects its old vine shiraz lead, as do the peppery, savoury spice and game notes of its bouquet. The palate is tightly wound, with firm, finely textured tannins and vibrant acidity supporting crunchy, tangy berry fruits. An elegant, refreshing Bin 138, closing with slightly bitter tannins."

"This year's release is a blend of 65% shiraz, 20% grenache and 15% mataro. It's all Barossa Valley. I'm generally a fan of Penfolds Bin 138 and even from a tough vintage like 2011, I am again.
It's not quite ready to offer itself up but drinkability is still writ pretty large. You wouldn't pick it as the result of a difficult season. Raspberries, dark cherries, cranberry, smoky earth. There's a briney, minerally, seaweedy character here too but it works in the context of the wine. Satiny texture. Some alcohol warmth. Excellent balance.. in terms of the Bin 138 line, this is an admirable addition."
