"If the top end white wines from Penfold's once used to lag behind the reds, then I'm not sure they do any longer. This looked great over two days, in fact much better on the second where it insistently nudged itself up to 95 points. It smells of lemon, nuts, white peach, yeast and clove spice oak - a paradox of wildness and refinement. On the palate fine and tight with penetrating grapefruity acidity running through a milky texture. There's flavours of lemon, white peach, spicy ginger and clove oak offset by more savoury yeasty characters. It's flinty and a little nervous too finishing with with spicy oak and savoury lemon curd flavours. Expensive but first class."

Penfolds Reserve Bin Chardonnay has evolved into a wine that is now a distinctive, single-region style in its own right, and an integral part of the Penfolds portfolio. All fruit is hand-picked into small bins and then whole-bunch pressed. The juice is run off into barriques directly from the press, and allowed to undergo a wild fermentation. Enhanced mouthfeel and complexities are achieved by fermenting on full solids, using a relatively high percentage of new oak. The wine undergoes 100% wild, malolactic fermentation. The fruit for the 2006 Reserve Bin 06A Chardonnay was sourced from cooler areas of the Adelaide Hills with the focus on individual vineyards from the Piccadilly Valley.
