[SOLD-OUT] Penfolds '76' Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet 2006

"A finely made and balanced blend with depth, freshness and structure. Its heady, floral and spicy, with sweet aromas of blueberries, cassis, plums and blackberries supported by sweet chocolate/vanilla oak with earthy and faintly eucalypt undertones. Its plush, sweet palate of luscious jujube-like black, blue and red berry fruit is underpinned by a fine, tight-knit firmness, as the wine culminates with an impression of weight and structure, with lingering notes of black berries, cloves and licorice."

"This is a special blend of Koonunga Hill packaged with a charmingly retro label and available only through restaurants, duty-free stores " and the Penfolds Magill Estate cellar door. It's medium-bodied and so neither big nor rich; but that's part of its charm. If you're looking for a 'big' red steer clear of this. But ... Classic Koonunga Hill character. Moderately intense, full of berried flavour, cedary and structured. Slightly warm finish, but it's in fine shape. If you want to tuck some good Koonunga Hill in your cellar, find yourself some of this. All about style and balance."

"The year nineteen seventy six is significant for (at least) two reasons. It was the inaugural release of Penfold's Koonunga Hill and also the year that our family emigrated from England to Australia. Surely both momentous occasions and events of equal significance in the history of Australian wine. Now if only Koonunga Hill were still this good....

It smells of toast, rich berry fruit, liquorice, coal and menthol. It smells like an old Penfold's wine. On the palate medium to full bodied and deeply fruited with dark berry, plum, spice and aniseed with toasty oak in support. It has light tannins that are charmingly loose and slightly gritty, fresh clean acidity and excellent weight and length of flavour. Drink it whilst wearing a pair of flared trousers and a tight T-Shirt to get in the mood. It's a retro ripper."
