“It’s made from all old vine fruit – 95% of the wine was grown on shiraz vines planted in the 1950s, the remainder on vines planted in the 1960s and 70s. It’s fermented in open pots before going into French oak. Heathcote in the 1950s; that would have been some place. Paul Osicka is near Heathcote but more accurately is at Graytown, where gold was suddenly all the rage in the 1860s.

Reliable. Hearty. Smooth-skinned. Deepset with blackberried, plum-shot fruit flavour. All positives. Add notes of clove, anise, mocha and gum leaf, fasten it together with firm, dry tannin, and you have yourself a red perfect for midst-of-winter drinking. Pour a glass and sit at the most recent point of a captivating history.”
