"We are very pleased to release the 2009 vintage of Pinot Noir L'ami sage and Les cinq. These wines are grown, harvested and vinified in the same way and we marvel at their different expression of "terroir".
The tiny amount of Les cinq which we grow from just 5 of the most westerly and elevated rows, is always the most elegant, alluring, and fragrant in the vineyard. By delightful contrast, the major part of the pinot blocks grow the L'ami sage, and have consistently resulted in pinot noir that has a more voluptuous character, with a pronounced structure and definition of fine tannin and luscious fruit. Perhaps a bit more skeletal and muscular.
Both wines reflect a Burgundian inspiration, expressing savoury, earthy elements, fresh vibrant fruit and silky tannins with balance and amazing persistence on the palate.
I am sure everyone would recall the unprecedented nature of the extreme heat associated with a few days in late January and early February 2009. Whilst we experienced some dreadful heat damage to our crop, there were many who suffered far greater and tragic losses. By comparison, we certainly count our blessings!
After huge effort to ensure that the vineyard was manicured back to pristine condition ["... if in doubt, cut it out!"], we found the losses amounted to two-thirds of the crop! The good news is that the little remaining fruit ripened perfectly and reflects richness and intensity of varietal characters across the board."
