JEREMY OLIVER 98 POINTS!
"What a follow-on from the superlative 2002 vintage! Its penetrative, floral and smoky aromas of pure lime, lemon and apple overlie a slightly funky and minerally background of chalky, earthy complexity. Fine, taut and shapely, its wonderfully open expression of pristine Riesling flavours are tightly punctuated by sherbet-like acids and underpinned by fine, chalky phenolics. Superbly long and structured, it's an essay in balance and concentration. World class. Eden Valley." - Jeremy Oliver
"Lower than average winter and spring rainfall was encountered during 2002 which impacted on soil moisture reserves in the vineyard, this in conjunction with un-typical very windy conditions during flowering resulted in lower bunch numbers and subsequent reduced yields at harvest. Following a cool start to summer, the month of January saw very hot and dry conditions, which brought about early veraison. During mid February 2003 heavy rains were encountered which caused some disease concerns. These concerns were however dispelled with the advent of fine warm and dry conditions, which minimised any disease incidence through until harvest was completed. The Riesling grapes were allowed to ripen fully and were only picked when the flavours of rich flowery limes were achieved, and when the supporting mineral acid balance was at its optimum. The Jacob's Creek Steingarten Riesling preserves the delicate lemon-lime citrus fruit and the very soft, but mineral like flavours which typifies the varietal fruit characteristics of a classic Cool Climate Riesling. The ripening of the grapes was monitored with regular berry tasting by Winemakers in the vineyard, to ensure the grapes were harvested at maximum flavour concentration." - Jacobs Creek
"Developing. Lanolin and petroleum and lemon, the first signs of toast and preserved lemons signalling the start of its second life. Very good. Just starting to drink now - depending on how you like them." - Campbell Mattinson
