"The 2015 Eclipse is 90% Grenache, 7% Graciano and 3% Shiraz, all from the estate vineyard in McLaren Vale. It's packed with concentrated fruit. Yes, it's a powerful, high-octane wine, but the alcohol doesn't show as heat when served at the proper temperature (16-18 degrees Celsius, or 60-65 degrees Fahrenheit). Deep raspberry and mulberry flavors pick up hints of spice on the lingering, silky-firm finish."

This year's Eclipse is produced from 90% Grenache, 3% Shiraz and 7% Graciano, all grown at McLaren Vale on the Winery Block, Almond Block and BJ’s Block. It has a lovely aroma combining perfumed fruit and earth scents in a way which is quite compelling. The wine tastes very full bodied and concentrated and yet there is remarkable restraint and balance too. Firm tannins provide an authoritative finish. I think the tasting impression is similar to listening to the first movement of Beethoven’s 5th symphony – quite dramatic! Drink now with flavoursome food or cellar for up to 10 years.

Noon

I tried this on a table in a Seoul, Wine Australia tasting. Ballroom wines. Curiosity piqued. The 2015 season for Noon produced ‘generous wines’, which is off a pretty high bar!

The estate grenache is of course planted 1930s, unirrigated, bush vine, treated with copper and sulphur (only if required), and nothing else. The graciano and shiraz portions are from another McLaren Vale vineyard. (90% Grenache, 3% Shiraz and 7% Graciano) Hard to judge in some respects, it feels mostly in balance, but geez, does it pack a punch. It’s a freight train of dark, unctuous, palate staining dark fruit, coal-tar tannins and liquid spice. What I most liked about the wine was little flecks of eucalyptus, green herbs, white pepper amongst that luscious mass of brooding fruit character. It didn’t really feel so much sweet as wildly opulent and there’s a good five chomps of tannin to get through too. It stacks up, if you’re after where bold wines can go.
