Top 100 South African Wines! Four Stars!
"Fresh and lively with a flinty nose and elegant lemon and pear flavours. The grapes are sourced from a single block located on the lower slopes of Klein Constantia. Three different batches were harvested between January and February to ensure freshness, fruit and intensity. The palate is rich with a delicate mousse and fine bubbles, rounded off with a long zesty finish."
Klein Constantia
Klein Constantia is renowned as one of the oldest and most revered South African producers. Though established in 1817, its historical roots reach back to 1708 when winemaking began on the Western Cape. Jane Austen recommended in Sense and Sensibility a little Constantia “for its healing powers on a disappointed heart” and Napoleon Bonaparte requested a glass on his deathbed.
This is a Blanc de Blancs, made from 100% Chardonnay. The wine is aged for 9 months in oak before careful blending and bottling before a secondary fermentation takes place in bottle (Methode Cap Classique). Extended cellaring on lees lends a buttery brioche character, which is matched by a fresh lively acidity, flinty minerality, notes of lemon and pear. This is a powerful Sparkling but is one of true refinement. Venture out and try a Cap Classique! You won't forget it.
