(aged in large oak barrels, 25% of them new): Inky ruby. Ripe, oak-spiced cherry and blueberry aromas are lifted by a floral note and smoky minerality. Fleshy and seamless in texture, offering sweet dark berry flavors and a suave floral pastille quality. Emphatically fruity and expansive, closing with impressive cling, repeating spiciness and subtle tannins adding shape.

Leading off the reds and a wine with outstanding potential, the 2014 Cornas Les Arênes (Arênes is the Spanish word for very finely decomposed granite) comes from the southern region of the appellation; it was completely destemmed and raised in 20% new oak. It’s an elegant, finesse-driven red that has medium to full-bodied richness, excellent ripeness and lots of garrigue, black cherries and smoked herbs on the nose. It’s more reminiscent of the 2012 than the 2013, and should drink nicely on release.
