Latour-Giraud Pommard Cuvee Carmen 2021

SUCCULENCE AND PERSISTENCE - A GENEROUS POMMARD VILLAGES FEATURING 1er CRU DECLASSIFIED FRUIT

"Excellent limpid ruby color. Fresh if somber aromas include those of forest floor, red currant, dark cherry and a hint of the sauvage. I very much like the texture of the equally polished and sleek medium-bodied flavors that also flash evident minerality on the tension-filled, youthfully austere and balanced finish that isn't quite as persistent. This should repay up to a decade of keeping yet there is sufficient mid-palate fat to allow it to be enjoyed young too." - Allen Meadows

“A part is his better plot of village Pommard, the rest is declassified 1er cru Refène. There’s a bit of bacon fat here, a little wildness. A slightly darker crimson colour, a firmer, sturdier bouquet. Higher gas at the moment. Plenty of energy on the palate, less peppery, good acid balance, a darker edge to the strawberry, and considerable persistence.

Jean-Pierre Latour is my hero this year for two reasons. Firstly, though he has made wines which can compare with those made by his colleagues, he does not feel that they are worthy of the current pricing in Burgundy, and so has declassified most of them – 1er Cru down to village and a Pommard plot offered as Bourgogne Rouge. He wants the quality to be in phase with the appellation on the label. Thank you Jean-Pierre. And secondly because his range of white wines was just about the finest I tasted through the autumn months! The whites and reds are day and night, to employ his words.” - Jasper Morris MW

"Pommard is a very old village and sits on the site of an ancient temple Christian, built by the Gauls and dedicated to Pomona, the goddess responsible for fruit protection. In the years 1005, the name of the village became “Polmarium” or “Polmarca” and underwent several subsequent changes before to become “Pommard”. The Cuvée Carmen represents the blend of two vineyards located furthest the west of the village. The wine is characterized by aromas of blackberry and blueberry, accompanied by notes of currants. Its deep color is the reflection of a wine with robust and authentic character that will age pleasantly." - Jean Pierre Latour
