[SOLD-OUT] Kay Brothers Block 6 Shiraz 2004

Robert Parker 98 points!
"Robert Parker has been a huge fan of Kay Bros and regularly scoring Block 6 in the mid-high 90's for over a decade. Whilst Parker may have recently 'discovered' the wine for many wine enthusiasts, Block 6 has been a feature in many Australian cellars for decades. The planting of Block 6 commenced on the 18th of July 1892 and when finished 5,890 Shiraz vines had been placed in the fertile soil at Kay's Amery Vineyard. Of the original 12 acres only 4 remain today with approximately 2,000 vines - 8 acres were grubbed in 1983/84. In their 112th year an excellent crop was handpicked from these ancient gnarled vines and the grapes fermented by traditional methods in open fermenters built in 1896. After basket pressing the wine spent over 24 months maturing in new American and Baltic oak barriques prior to bottling in July 2006. This wine is an excellent example of the traditional big rich full bodied McLaren Vale style - a real "Roast Dinner" red of intense flavour and great longevity.

There are 1,400 cases of the flagship cuvee, the Block 6 Shiraz, which is aged 28 months in 60% new American oak and 40% new Hungarian oak. Typically, it possesses between 15-16% alcohol and is always a candidate for twenty or more years of cellaring. The 2004 Shiraz Block 6 is the finest example of this cuvee since the 1998. It is an awesomely concentrated Shiraz with an inky/plum/garnet/purple color and a sweet nose of roasted meats, dried herbs, ground pepper, blackberries, and cassis. This intense, full-bodied effort boasts a profound depth and richness as well as layer upon layer of awesome concentration and length. While approachable, it should hit its peak in 5-6 years, and last for two decades or more."
