"Primitivo is found growing on the heel of the boot of
Italy in a region called Puglia. Originally a native of
Croatia, Primitivo eventually travelled west to the USA
where it mysteriously became known as Zinfandel. We
have used the Primitivo synonym with this wine to
reflect its exuberant Mediterranean style.
McLaren Vale experienced cool conditions in December 2008 and most of January 2009 with temperatures only climbing above 30 degrees on three days up until a hot spell in late January. The rest of 2009 summer was relatively mild allowing the fruit to develop with balanced characters.
Our Primitivo was fermented employing gentle cap
management techniques. The wine was fermented to
dryness after which it macerated on skins for a further 4 weeks. The pressed wine was aged in French and American oak for 12 months.
Spicy
fruit cake aromas with intriguing
nuances of dried apricot, a slight savouriness and light herbal notes. The palate is full of dark brambles
and tangy stewed rhubarb, hints of herbs and has
lovely chalky tannins. The wine finishes with a lingering briariness."
