[SOLD-OUT] Kalleske Eduard Shiraz 2008

PHILIP WHITE 93+++ POINTS! CAMPBELL MATTINSON 92 POINTS! ROBERT PARKER 92 POINTS!

"Classical dry country northern Barossa red, this. It has the prettiest confectioner's bouquet, with marshmallow sugar, fairy floss and musk sticks giving the lollyshop top notes, while below simmer shte licorice, the deep dark berries, the prunes, dried figs and pity tannins, like dried apple. There is no intrusive oak, and while the alcohol is big, the wine has the density to balance it, and the structure to ensure it lasts a good twenty years." Phillip White

"This comes from three vineyard blocks on the Kalleske property - each ranging from 50-100+ years old. It was matured in both French and American oak and then bottled both unfined and unfiltered. It's made in the 'gee that's a big bugger, init!' style.

It's big and warm with alcohol but it's ever-so-soft and tidy that you'd almost say that it shows restraint. Almost; the brandied alcohol is pretty assertive. It tastes of tar and soy sauce, sweet saturated blackberry and coffeed, toasty oak. It's not syrupy; it's full-flavoured but relatively fine." - Campbell Mattinson

"The 2008 Edward Shiraz has a very deep garnet-purple color and quite a lot of cedar on the nose over notes of coffee beans, kirsch, blackberry preserves, licorice and loam. Very crisp in the mouth with a medium-firm level grainy tannins, this is an opulent, generously fleshed style with a long finish that still shows the oak. Still very tight and youthful, give this wine another 2 years for the oak to marry and drink it 2013 to 2019+." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown

"Eduard is sourced from three vineyard blocks on the Kalleske property that were planted between 1905 and 1960. Vines are dry grown and produce low yields. It is named after Karl Heinrich 'Eduard' Kalleske who worked the Kalleske vineyards from 1853 until the 1880s. The old vine Shiraz blocks are open-top fermented, traditionally pressed and matured in new and seasoned hogsheads for two years prior to bottling unfined and unfiltered. Eduard is an intense, powerful and full-bodied wine exhibiting dense classic Barossa old vine Shiraz characters. Inky black fruit flavours abound together with harmonized tannins, subtle oak complexity a sturdy structure and great length. Eduard is a sophisticated wine of the highest calibre and is worthy of cellaring for many years." - Kalleske Wines
