Early this year, in fact during harvest 2013, I took a spin through the Gary Mills wine crypt high on a perch up in them Yarra hills to be met with a dazzling array of wines to taste " stuff just beginning its life, other things destined for bottle, and some things that were ready to roll that were new and exciting. Not sure what's bled out into the gossip circles, but there is a heap of excitement to come from this canny, and tall, and erudite, neo-styled negociant-winemaker. Here we travel to Moonambel in the Pyrenees and a vineyard planted in 1969. Natural yeast ferment, big whole bunch inclusion, and old oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Whoowee, this has some perfume. Floral, musk, candy canes, anejo tequila, red currants. Pretty, guttural with garrigue and spicy. Smooth across the palate, a really concentrated but inward looking wine that feels crisp in texture and refreshing throughout. Fruit is a touch muted, but you could say shy too, it does open up in glass and over time. Tannins are tense, linear, slender things that give pucker over grip. Amazing energy in the wine, vitality served by finishing briny and fresh. Tight and slender, a cool, reserved expression here. Exciting.

Jancis Robinson 17 points!Deep crimson. Very healthy sheen. Luxury Syrah! It would be great to have all northern Rhône Syrahs as accessible as this.

Huon Hooke 95 points!"Deep red/purple colour, and a lively fresh spicy bouquet, clean and vigorous. The palate is very fresh, clean and tight, with abundant spice flavours, violets and blueberry fruit. Fruit sweetness too. Vibrant, energetic medium-bodied wine with lovely array of flavours, which linger long on the farewell. Superb wine.
