“Gary Mills has been at his game for over a decade, yet still seems to get lumped into a zeitgeist category, or thought of as a ‘young’ winemaker. A decade might not be forever, but it is a reasonable track record as a solo producer. These Harem series wines seem to continue to impress, regardless of how you see the person behind them. The fruit for this wine comes from the Yarra Valley and Pyrenees, Victoria, and is given a fair dose of whole bunch fruit in the fermentation. Earth and brambles. Warm scents of dark, ripe berry fruits. Sweetness, but seriousness. Sloshes about the palate with fruit-driven gusto but feels really crunchy in texture, gently sweet in fruit flavour, given some structure from sandy, rasps of fine tannin and pepped up with cranberry-like acidity. An amaro feel with a touch of fennel and smoke too. It’s great to drink, a touch warm through back palate, but very, very enjoyable.”
