"From the Great Western vineyard of 'Garden Gully' planted somewhere in the late 19th century " the syrah clones being the 'Old Best's clones'. As per winemaker Gary Mills modus operandi, of sorts, this sees a high whack of whole bunch fruit (50% or so) in the ferment, ambient yeasts used, 10 months on lees in old oak and no filtering and fining before bottling. No additions save a small sulphur add before bottling.

Such succulence in this wine; mouthwatering but also that back palate acidity that gives further depth and an almost pliant 'bounce' to texture. It's a springy wine for sure, red currant and red berry juiciness springs back off sandy tannins and the briny lick of acidity that follows. Medium-bodied, but there's an inward, almost brooding concentration too. There's a leathery, earthy quality running through the wine, and spice is sarsaparilla/anise over subtle clove-oak presence. The wine finishes with grip that builds, and an amaro herb character lingers. Complex, tannin-derived structural wine of interest and character. Oh yes."

Very dark crimson. Very luscious and glamorous nose. Firm, dry, leathery nose. Great purity and drive. Salty. Long.

"Deep red/purple colour, with a dry spice and brazilnut aroma. Lots of graphite, ironstone and charcoal characters. Very full-bodied: it's massively framed, firmly tannic and gripping, with impressive attack and tremendous length. Serious wine. Great power, apmlitude and length, augmented by frisky acidity. Long-term aging."
