'A brand new release from Henschke, and might I suggest perhaps one of the most exciting in a long time, at least on surface value of this wine itself. Indeed, CM and I were sitting next to each other at the release tasting and caught eyes, a raised eyebrow, a nod. Enough said.

It is old vine shiraz from Eden Valley. Biodynamically grown. Celebrating 150 years of Henschke etc etc, but more about seeing the potential of this 50-year-old parcel of fruit that mostly went to Keyneton and Euphonium cuvees. Made pretty much like Hill Of Grace, it was explained. Old oak (90%), with French and American barrels used. I&rsquo m all over this. Indeed, though we can&rsquo t publish notes yet on the Hill Of Grace 2013 release, because of an embargo, this was almost on par for me, though probably in a better place currently to drink.

Perfumed red of red berry fruits, fragrant pepper and sweet spice, whiffs of liquorice, milk chocolate. Lots going on in perfume. Slides through the palate in a seamless sluice of dark fruits, high toned spice, green herb. It&rsquo s a medium weight yet quietly powerful red here. Long in flavour, palate staining, but sleek in a way too. Muscle car with a high polish. A formidable release.'
